The Sports Car With The Highest Top Speed In 2024

Standing out against the very best Europe has to offer, the 2024 Porsche 911 Turbo S boasts performance specs to rival supercars.

In 2024, the sports car segment is in one of the most competitive stages it has ever been, with brands from all around the globe releasing high-performance cars at all different price ranges. At the top of the sports car segment, the same brands have dominated for some time. One of these brands is Porsche, with the 911 nameplate defining the sports car philosophy for decades.

For the 2024 model year, Porsche's 911 range is the largest of all in the brand's fleet, with the Turbo S setting the standard for outright speed. Released for the first time back in 2004, the Turbo S was designed to be a faster, more powerful version of the already class-leading 911 Turbo. The Porsche 911 Turbo S has continued to set the performance standard in the segment for the rest of the industry to chase. Here's a closer look at the 2024 Porsche 911 Turbo S and its staggering performance.

The 911 Turbo S Is The Fastest Car Porsche Currently Produces

With the 911 range being so dense in 2024, Porsche offers models focusing on straight-line speed and handling abilities. The prices for the different 911 models vary significantly, with the Turbo S finding itself towards the top end of the range. Starting at $230,400 for the coupe and $243,200, the 911 Turbo S sits with the headline-grabbing GT3 RS, which starts at $241,300. However, the title of most expensive 911 goes to the S/T, starting at a whopping $290,000.

A Top Speed Of 205 Miles Per Hour

Of all Porsche 911 models on sale in 2024, the Turbo S is the fastest, with a top speed of 205 miles per hour. This goes for both the Turbo S and Turbo S Cabriolet, with the two different versions sharing almost identical performance specs across the board. It must be noted that Porsche lists these specs with summer tires fitted to the cars.

In Comparison With The Rest Of The 911 Range

The '24 Turbo S is the only 911 model that breaks the 200-mile-per-hour barrier. The base-level 911 Carrera has a top speed of 182 miles per hour, with the Carerra T dropping to 181 miles per hour and the Carrera Cabriolet to 180 miles per hour. The Carrera 4 models also have 180 and 179 miles per hour top speeds. Moving slightly to the Carrera S, this model has a top speed of 191 miles per hour.

Despite falling in the middle of the 911 range, not many other 911s have a higher top speed than the Carrera S. The two Carrera GTS models up the speed slightly to 193 and 192 miles per hour (the lower speed for the Cabriolet), with the Carrera 4 GTS also topping out at 192 miles per hour. Regarding the track-focused GT3 RS, the top speed is expected to be low, at 184 miles per hour. The most expensive 911 S/T is only slightly faster at 86 miles per hour.

However, the two models that get the closest to the 911 Turbo S are the base 911 Turbo models, along with the 911 GT3 with Touring Package with a top speed of 199 miles per hour.

Excellent Performance Across The Board

It's not just the 2024 911 Turbo S's top speed that sets the standard for the sports car segment. The top-spec Turbo model manages to provide standout performance across the board. While it can't quite grip the tarmac like the GT3 or GT3 RS, the Turbo S has received endless praise for its stability and handling capabilities. The 911 nameplate, in general, also has an excellent reputation for being an 'everyday sports car,' thanks to its practical driving dynamics and blistering performance.

Its Engine Is A 3.7-Liter Twin-Turbocharged Flat-Six

The engine that powers the 911 Turbo range has become just as prominent as the nameplate itself, with the mighty 3.7-liter flat-six producing enough power and performance to turn the heads of almost every industry manufacturer.

2024 Porsche 911 Turbo S Performance Specifications

The 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo S feature the same updated flat-six for 2024, but the overall power output differs significantly. The 911 Turbo produces 572 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, whereas the top-spec Turbo S delivers a storming 640 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.

For 2024, Porsche has also introduced more updates for the powertrain, starting with the larger exhaust turbochargers and Piezo injectors being applied for the first time in the 911 Turbo S. Elements from the track-focused GT2 RS have also made their way into the Turbo S's construction, with former exhaust manifolds improving responsiveness and efficiency for the Turbo S, according to Porsche. The Turbo S has a redesigned 8-speed dual-clutch transmission to climb the speeds without interrupting power output.

The 911 Turbo S also features an updated engine cooling system, with a redesigned charge-air cooling and engine air intake. Previous Turbo S models utilized side air intakes in the rear fenders for the intercooler and a rear grille for aspirated engine air. For the new Turbo/Turbo S models, this has been reversed. The sports car features an additional two-track air outlet for the intercoolers between the rear fascia tailpipes, allowing for more efficient airflow and greater power output.

Acceleration To Rival The Quickest Cars In The World

As well as achieving the highest top speed of any sports car in 2024, the 911 Turbo S's acceleration is just as impressive, if not more impressive, than its maximum of 205 miles per hour. Coming with all-wheel-drive as standard, Porsche rates the 0 to 60 mile per hour time for Turbo S at just 2.6 seconds. However, Car and Driver managed to achieve it in a staggering 2.2 seconds during their test of the sports car.

By almost breaking the 2-second mark, the '24 911 Turbo S finds itself among the fastest sports cars and the fastest cars on the planet. The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon currently holds the 0 to 60 miles per hour record at 1.66 seconds, with the all-electric Rimac Nevera achieving it in 1.9 seconds. With the Challenger Demon being designed as a dragster and the Nevera being a multi-million dollar electric hypercar, holding up to these models is a mighty impressive feat.

The 911 Turbo S Compared To Its Rivals

Although the '24 911 Turbo S has the ability to compete with the very best the industry has to offer, the German sports car has quite a few different competitors that manage to reach a similar space. In 2024, multiple manufacturers are producing some seriously fast cars, with the sports car segment's popularity being increasingly attractive across Europe.

Its Rivals From Italy

When thinking of the countries that produce the best sports cars, if it's not Germany, you think of first it'll most likely be Italy. For 2024, Ferrari's sports car legacy is spearheaded by the 296 GTB. Thanks to its hybrid technology, the 296's 3.0-liter V-6 produces 819 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque. Ferrari also says that the car can reach a top speed of 205 miles per hour, but it falls short of the 911 Turbo's 0 to 60 miles per hour speed at 2.4 seconds, as tested by Car and Driver.

Alongside Ferrari, Lamborghini is a brand with deep roots within the sports car segment, producing some of the most legendary performance cars of all time. The Huracan Tecnica is the standard model for the long-standing nameplate, fitted with a potent 5.2-liter V-10 producing 630 horsepower and 417 pound-feet of torque. The 202 miles per hour top speed of the Huracan Tecnica is still impressive, but can't match up to the 911 Turbo S's flat-six.

Stiff Competition From McLaren and Aston Martin

It's not just the famous Italian Brands that manage to compete with the 911 Turbo S in 2024. The UK produces some blistering sports cars that can most definitely be considered next to Porsche's best. The all-new 2024 McLaren Artura also shares a top speed of 205 miles per hour from its 3.0-liter V-6, but it is yet another that can't match the 911 Turbo S's acceleration.

Another British brand introducing an all-new sports car for 2024 is Aston Martin, with the 2024 Vantage taking the nameplate to new territory. With a 4.0-liter V-8, the '24 Vantage produces 656 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. However, it fall slightly short of the 911 Turbo S in terms of maximum speed, with the Vantage topping out at 202 miles per hour.

Future Of The Porsche 911

Being on top of the sports car segment in 2024, the future of the Porsche 911 is shaping up to be even more exciting than where we are now. In 2025, the 992 generation will receive a midlife update, the 992.2. The main talking point for this update is Porsche introducing a mild hybrid system, which will only be implemented into the Carrera trims first.

As for the 911 Turbo, the current 3.7-liter flat-six engines will be replaced by a more efficient twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter flat-six. When the 911 Turbo trims will receive the same hybrid technology is currently unknown, but the 48-volt mild hybrid system coming with the lower trims for 2025 could unlock even more speed for the Turbo S if it needs any more.
